Marquis is a Germany-based fetish magazine founded by photographer-publisher Peter W. Czernich in 1994. For about twenty-five years it ran under his editorial hand as a leading Continental glossy for latex, rubber, fetish fashion, and SM-adjacent imagery. The title deliberately evokes the Marquis de Sade—not as a scholarly journal of libertine philosophy, but as a brand cue for elegant cruelty, costume-driven desire, and high-finish domination aesthetics.
From «O» to Marquis
Czernich’s earlier magazine O began as a spin-off of the British fetish title Skin Two and quickly developed its own German identity. After he lost rights to the O name, he launched Marquis in 1994 as successor. From the first issue it published semi-annually to quarterly for fetish, latex, and fashion readers who wanted photography, models, books, films, wardrobe, and lifestyle coverage rather than pure dungeon how-to.
Under Czernich the run first stopped in 2015 with issue 63, then returned in 2016 with issue 64 after economic restructuring. His last issue as editor-in-chief was number 67, the twenty-fifth anniversary edition—closing a long era in which his eye as photographer and art director largely defined the look.
U-Line Ownership
In 2019 the magazine was sold to U-Line publishing, previously known mainly for its Ubooks imprint. Issue 68 appeared in March 2020. Czernich stayed on as creative consultant and photographer while owner Andreas Reichardt took formal charge. Early new-management content included an exclusive interview and latex shoot with cabaret artist Lisa Eckhart, underlining continued interest in glamour and cultural crossover.
Editorial Focus and Heavy Rubber
Marquis sits between fetish and fashion: model portfolios, latex styling, film and book notes, lifestyle pieces, and photography that treats SM wardrobe as design object as well as erotic costume. Compared with harder documentary or pure porn catalogs, it leans polished and mainstream-glamour inside the fetish world.
In 1996 Czernich spun out Heavy Rubber. Where Marquis courts fashion and lifestyle, Heavy Rubber targets readers for whom latex and rubber are the erotic core. Together they map a familiar European split: the semi-glossy that can share a design shelf, and the specialty title aimed at material kink. For adult media history, Marquis remains a durable German platform that kept latex photography and SM-adjacent fashion visible from the 1990s club boom into the U-Line era.
