Marquis Magazine: German Latex, Fetish Fashion, and SM Gloss

Marquis is a German fetish magazine, founded in 1994 by photographer and publisher Peter W. Czernich. The title nods to the Marquis de Sade. It is not a scholarly journal of libertine philosophy. It is a brand built on elegant cruelty, desire driven by costume, and a high-finish look of domination. The readers are adults. The pages stay on latex, rubber, fetish fashion, and images that sit next to SM. For about twenty-five years under Czernich it was a core Continental glossy. The coverage runs to photography, models, books, films, wardrobes, and lifestyle, not dungeon tutorials or a hard porn catalog.

From O to Marquis

The predecessor was O. It began as a spin-off of the British fetish title Skin Two and then grew a German identity of its own. After Czernich lost the right to the name O, he launched Marquis in 1994 as the successor. It started as a semi-annual and later moved to quarterly. His eye as photographer and art director largely set the look. Publication was not smooth. The run stopped in 2015 with issue 63, then returned in 2016 after an economic restructuring, with issue 64. His last issue as editor was number 67, the twenty-fifth anniversary edition.

After the sale

In 2019 Marquis was sold to U-Line, a publisher previously known mainly for the Ubooks imprint. Issue 68, out in March 2020, opened the new management. Owner Andreas Reichardt took charge of operations. Czernich stayed on as creative consultant and photographer. Early content under the new owners included an exclusive interview and a latex shoot with cabaret artist Lisa Eckhart, a sign that the magazine still wanted glamour and cultural crossover.

Two German fetish titles

The edit has always sat between fetish and fashion. SM wardrobe is treated as a design object and as erotic costume, a polished line that can pass for mainstream glamour inside the fetish world. In 1996 Czernich split off Heavy Rubber to separate the readership. The pair follows a familiar European split. Marquis leans toward fashion and lifestyle and can sit beside design objects. Heavy Rubber is for readers who take latex and rubber themselves as the erotic core. From the club boom of the 1990s into the U-Line years, Marquis remained a stable German platform for latex photography and fashion imagery next to SM.
