Justine (de Sade): The Misfortunes of Virtue and Foundational SM Literature

2025年3月9日
A A

Justine, or The Misfortunes of Virtue (French: Justine, ou Les Malheurs de la Vertu) is a 1791 novel by Donatien Alphonse François de Sade—better known as the Marquis de Sade—and one of the foundation stones of literature that eroticizes cruelty, confinement, philosophical libertinage, and the systematic punishment of virtue. Set in France just before the Revolution, it tells of a young woman who uses the name Thérèse as she recounts her life to Madame de Lorsagne while being transported toward punishment and death. She explains the chain of misfortunes that delivered her there. For BDSM readers, Justine is not a consent manual; it is the classical narrative engine that yoked “virtue punished” to sexual domination and helped later centuries invent a vocabulary of sadism.

History of the Work: Three Expanding Versions

An early form, Les infortunes de la vertu, was written in two weeks in 1787 while Sade was imprisoned in the Bastille. That novella (about 187 pages) contains relatively little of the graphic obscenity that later defined his reputation; it follows fashionable classical style with verbose, metaphorical description. A much expanded and more explicit version, Justine ou Les Malheurs de la vertu (1791), was the first of Sade’s books published. A further extended La Nouvelle Justine ou Les Malheurs de la vertu (The New Justine) appeared in the Netherlands in 1797.

That final version abandoned the first-person narration of the earlier texts, included around one hundred engravings, and was paired with a continuation, Juliette, about Justine’s sister. Together the set ran to ten volumes and nearly four thousand pages; publication completed in 1801. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the arrest of the anonymous author of Justine and Juliette; Sade spent the last thirteen years of his life incarcerated. The Cour Royale de Paris ordered the book’s destruction on 19 May 1815. From Bastille draft to imperial suppression, the textual history is itself a story of expansion, scandal, and state violence against the text.

Modern Publication in English and French

A censored English Justine appeared in the United States from Risus Press in the early 1930s and went through many reprints—proof of demand even in bowdlerized form. The first unexpurgated English translation (by “Pieralessandro Casavini,” a pseudonym for Austryn Wainhouse) was published by Olympia Press in 1953; Wainhouse later revised it for Grove Press (1965), the edition that put Sade into mid-century American countercultural and academic circulation.

A 1999 Wordsworth edition translates an earlier version in which the heroine calls herself Sophie rather than Thérèse—useful for readers who want the less expanded textual layer. The full 1797 Nouvelle Justine has never received a complete English translation, though it was printed in French under the more permissive conditions of the late 1960s in rival collected editions: Jean-Jacques Pauvert’s thirty-volume Œuvres complètes (1968) and the Cercle du Livre Précieux sixteen-volume definitive set (1967). English-language Sade culture, in other words, still often runs on the 1791 shape rather than the absolute maximal French text.

Plot: Orphaned Virtue in a Machine of Betrayal

Justine begins as a twelve-year-old maiden set adrift to make her way in France; the narrative follows her to age twenty-six in a quest for virtue that the world systematically rapes, imprisons, lectures, and re-educates through pain. Sexual “lessons” hide under virtuous masks. She seeks refuge and confession in a monastery only to be forced into sexual slavery by monks who subject her to orgies and assaults. She helps a gentleman robbed in a field and is taken to his château with promises of work caring for his wife, then confined in a cave for similar torments. When she begs a judge for mercy in an arson case, she is humiliated in open court without defense. The punishments rhyme across episodes, described in characteristic Sadean detail, yet the novel is more than a catalog of sadism—it stages debates between libertine philosophy and pious resistance.

Justine (Thérèse or Sophie in the first version) and Juliette are daughters of Monsieur de Bertole, a widower banker. Bertole falls for another man’s lover; that man, Monsieur de Noirseuil, feigns friendship, engineers Bertole’s bankruptcy, and poisons him, leaving the girls orphans. In a nunnery the abbess corrupts Juliette and tries to corrupt Justine; Justine remains sweet and “virtuous.” When the abbess learns of Bertole’s death, she expels both girls. Juliette’s path continues in the companion volume; Justine becomes a maid in the house of the usurer Harpin, where her troubles renew.

Seeking work and shelter she repeatedly falls into the hands of rogues who ravish and torture her and her occasional friends. Harpin falsely accuses her of theft; she faces execution and allies with Miss Dubois, a criminal who engineers a prison fire that kills twenty-one people so the band can escape. After leaving Dubois’s company, Justine wanders onto the lands of the Count of Bressac—one of the novel’s central libertine interlocutors—where philosophical seduction and cruelty intertwine.

The frame tale is told by “Thérèse” at an inn to Madame de Lorsagne—who is finally revealed as her long-lost sister Juliette. The structural irony is brutal: Juliette submits to a period of vice and secures a comfortable existence from which she can exercise good, while Justine refuses compromise for the “greater good” and is plunged deeper into violation than those who go willingly. Madame de Lorsagne eventually relieves her from a life of vice and clears her name. Soon afterward Justine becomes introverted and morose and is struck dead by lightning. Madame de Lorsagne joins a religious order after the death. Fortune, in Sade’s cruel geometry, does not reward virtue; nature itself seems to finish the job the libertines began.

Scholarship: Beauvoir, Debate, and “Pious Hedonism”

Simone de Beauvoir’s 1955 essay “Faut-il brûler Sade?” (“Should we burn Sade?”) remains a landmark. She argues that beyond scandal, Sade uses Justine to reconcile individual pleasure with social existence and to probe an ethical dimension of libertine philosophy. The novel is not only shock; it is a machine for testing whether any moral language survives contact with absolute egotism and absolute vulnerability.

Commentators note that libertines want intellectual victory as much as physical domination. Victims—Justine above all—answer with forceful, reasoned piety. One scholar observes that libertines derive as much satisfaction from defeating opponents in argument as from abusing them, and that Justine rises to the challenge. James Fowler has linked her exchanges with figures such as the Marquis de Bressac to “pious hedonism”: her piety itself offers the most intense pleasure she can experience, a rival intensity to libertine sensualism. That reading keeps Justine from collapsing into pure passivity; she is a philosophical combatant even when she loses every material fight.

For historians of sexuality and of the gothic, the novel sits at a crossroads: Enlightenment debate form, pornographic expansion, anti-clerical and anti-judicial satire, and a proto-psychological interest in how ideology survives torture. Modern BDSM studies sometimes cite Sade as etymological and cultural root while insisting—correctly—that consensual sadomasochism is not Sadean crime fiction.

Legacy: Anti-Justine, Film, Comics, and Name Echoes

In 1798 rival writer Rétif de la Bretonne published Anti-Justine, proof that Sade’s heroine was already a polemical reference point. Olympia Press issued a contemporary retelling, The Turkish Bath (1969), in autobiographical format attributed to “Justine and Juliette Lemercier.” Lars von Trier named Kirsten Dunst’s character in Melancholia (2011) after Sade’s heroine. Julia Ducournau, director of Raw, has said she named her protagonist after Sade’s Justine. The name travels even when the full plot does not.

Film and media adaptations include:

  • Jesús Franco’s 1969 international co-production Marquis de Sade: Justine (Jack Palance, Romina Power, Klaus Kinski)
  • Claude Pierson’s relatively faithful 1972 Justine de Sade with Alice Arno
  • Tatsumi Kumashiro’s 1973 Nikkatsu Roman Porno Woman Hell: Woods are Wet (Onna Jigoku: Mori wa Nureta)
  • 1977’s Cruel Passion
  • Presence in the 2000 Sade film Quills
  • Guido Crepax’s graphic novel version

The gothic novel tradition and academic Sade studies remain permanent cross-references. Each adaptation chooses its angle: softcore spectacle, faithful literary sadism, Japanese pink-film transposition, or biopic cameo. None replaces the textual machines of 1787/1791/1797, but all prove the story’s portability as a myth of virtue under erotic siege.

Reading Justine on a Kink Site

Strip the academic politeness and the book is still what it is: repeated non-consensual assault framed as philosophy. That is precisely why it is foundational rather than instructional. The word sadism points back to a literary world in which the dominant party’s pleasure is theorized without a safeword, and in which the virtuous body becomes a curriculum. Readers seeking negotiated power exchange will not find best practices here; they will find the root system of a cultural fantasy structure—confinement, clerical hypocrisy, judicial theater, sisterly double paths of vice and virtue—that later erotica, underground comics, and art cinema keep sampling.

Justine endures because it refuses modern consent ethics while inventing a durable narrative technology: the virtuous protagonist as object of systematic libertine education, the dialogue as duel, the expansion from Bastille novella to multi-thousand-page illustrated monster, and the state response of arrest and ordered destruction. From Wainhouse and Grove to Franco and Nikkatsu, from Beauvoir’s essay to von Trier’s naming joke, the misfortunes of virtue keep circulating. For SM literary history, that circulation is the point.
