John Alexander Scott Coutts (9 December 1902 – 5 August 1962), known worldwide as John Willie, was a fetish artist, photographer, cartoonist, and the founding publisher-editor of the underground magazine Bizarre. Across roughly a decade of irregular issues he drew the damsel-in-distress icon Sweet Gwendoline, the raven-haired dominatrix often labeled U69 (censored as U89 in some printings), and the bumbling male foil Sir Dystic d’Arcy—characters that still define mid-century bondage cartoon style for collectors and historians of fetish art.
Distributed under the counter rather than on newsstands, Bizarre nonetheless shaped later fetish publishing. When Bettie Page nostalgia and leather fashion revived in the 1970s, Willie’s work rode the same wave back into print and museum conversations. In 2009 he was inducted into the Leather Hall of Fame. He grew up middle class and attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Scots, he was forced to resign in 1925 after marrying night-club hostess Eveline Fisher without his commanding officer’s permission—an early sign that respectability and his private life would keep colliding.
The couple emigrated to Brisbane, Australia in 1926; the marriage ended in divorce in 1930. In Australia Coutts joined a local High Heel Club, likely his introduction to organized “shoe lover” networks and fetish print culture. Access to that club’s mailing list later let him sell illustrations and photographs while working ordinary day jobs. He even ran a company making exotic footwear under the name Achilles—fetish desire turned into small manufacturing.
In 1936 he met Holly Anna Faram, who became his second wife in 1942, his muse, and a frequent model in photographs that would fill Bizarre. In 1945 he moved to North America; Holly stayed in Australia, where she died in 1983 at age seventy. Coutts wanted New York but immigration trouble kept him in Montreal for a period before he could settle toward the American orbit that fed the underground.
Entering the American Fetish Underground
Willie was introduced to the American fetish network through pioneer merchant Charles Guyette and later worked with Irving Klaw, the pin-up and bondage merchandiser later hammered by obscenity prosecutions. Willie’s clean ink line and theatrical scenarios influenced later artists including Gene Bilbrew and Eric Stanton. The genealogy matters: Guyette’s custom photo and garment trade, Willie’s magazine and cartoons, Klaw’s mass mail-order, then Stanton/Bilbrew’s next-generation illustration—each stage made bondage imagery more circulable.
He published under the pen name John Willie for the rest of his career. The name became a brand synonymous with cheerful, meticulously drawn peril: ropes, heels, elaborate capture scenarios, and a tone that treated fetish as stylish adventure rather than clinical pathology.
Sweet Gwendoline and the Supporting Cast
Sweet Gwendoline is the blonde (or light-haired) perpetual captive—resourceful enough to stay interesting, doomed enough to stay tied. Opposite her stands U69, the dark-haired dominatrix who engineers Gwendoline’s predicaments (her label censored to U89 in some editions when the original number read as too blatant). Sir Dystic d’Arcy is the prominent male character, often read as a self-parody of Willie: well-meaning, inept, comic relief amid female-centered bondage theater.
Sweet Gwendoline also ran as a serial in Robert Harrison’s mainstream girlie magazine Wink from June 1947 to February 1950, and resurfaced in other titles over the years. That crossover into slightly more above-ground “men’s magazine” space helped the character outlive any single underground issue.
Willie’s studio humor shows in his own quotations. He once noted that unless a model was a good actress with “that type” of face, it was hard for her to look miserable on set: “My studio is a pretty cheerful place, and quite unlike the atmosphere that surrounds Gwendoline when the Countess gets hold of her.” The gap between cheerful production and drawn distress is pure fetish theater.
Bizarre Magazine: Fashion, Fantasy, and Letters
Bizarre began in late 1945 while Coutts was living in Canada. It appeared irregularly from 1946 to 1959. Coutts survived censors by carefully avoiding full nudity, homosexuality, overt graphic violence, or anything that would read as openly “perverse” to postal and police gatekeepers. Bondage and costume fantasy were smuggled in as fashion eccentricity and playful “unorthodox” style—the same survival strategy many mid-century fetish publishers used.
Issues mixed photographs (often of Holly), costume design drawings (some from reader ideas), and long reader letters on high heels, bondage, amputee fetishism, sadomasochism, transvestism, corsets, and body modification. Critics accused him of inventing the letters; he insisted they were genuine. Whether every letter was real or lightly edited, the magazine functioned as a proto-forum: people who thought they were alone discovered a correspondence network.
Publication paused completely from 1947 to 1951. In 1956 Coutts sold the title to an editor known only as R.E.B., who produced six more issues before the magazine folded in 1959. There was no public announcement of the ownership change inside the book. Issue 23 introduced Mahlon Blaine as the artist meant to replace Willie as primary illustrator—a baton pass that collectors still note when dating late numbers.
Willie’s own magazine manifesto voice is preserved in copy that framed Bizarre as a journal for “pleasant optimists who frown on convention,” for people with “the courage of their own convictions,” interested in fashion that applies new materials and ornaments to create the unusual without pretending history never looped. On sex he wrote against shame regimes that taught generations that desire was fine only if unenjoyed—and that mutual enjoyment should be discussable before marriage, not policed into perversion labels. That editorial politics—consent-adjacent mutuality, anti-hypocrisy, pro-fantasy fashion—still reads as kin to later leather and kink community rhetoric, even when the drawings themselves are classic damsel-peril rather than modern negotiated D/s.
Later Years, Hollywood, Guernsey, Death
After the first twenty-three issues, Coutts moved to Hollywood. In 1961 a brain tumor forced him to shut down his mail-order business. He destroyed archives—an irretrievable loss for historians—returned to the British Isles, and lived with his sister on Guernsey. He died in his sleep on 5 August 1962.
His art also appeared in Japan’s Kitan Club, making him one of the few Western fetish artists to cross into that postwar Japanese SM pulp world. That East–West print bridge prefigures later global traffic in bondage illustration and photo sets.

Jared Harris portrayed Willie in the film The Notorious Bettie Page (2006), including a fictionalized meeting with Page. The Leather Hall of Fame induction in 2009 confirmed scene recognition beyond collector circles.
