Go Hirano (平野剛) was a Japanese homoerotic fetish artist. With Go Mishima, Sanshi Funayama, and Tatsuji Okawa, he is named by artist-historian Gengoroh Tagame as a central figure in Japan’s first wave of contemporary gay artists—core lineage for gay male BDSM and muscle-fetish drawing.
Work and Magazines
Little is known about Hirano personally; he submitted work anonymously. His realist illustrations often feature masculine, body-haired men rather than soft bishōnen types. In the 1960s he appeared in Fuzokukitan, a fetish magazine mixing gay, straight, and lesbian content. From the 1970s through the 1990s his art ran in Barazoku, Japan’s first commercially circulated gay magazine, putting hairy masculine desire into mainstream gay print as leather and SM aesthetics hardened elsewhere.
