Experimental Lecture, published in 1878, is an English pornographic novel from the Victorian period. It came out under the pseudonym “Colonel Spanker” for the “Cosmopolitan Society of Bibliophiles,” an imprint of the erotic publisher Charles Carrington. It is not a how-to for training or punishment. It turns class theater into a private whipping fantasy. The people in it are adults, in the usual way of English flagellation erotica of that century.
The plot follows a colonel and his circle. They keep a house on Park Lane in London. Genteel young women are kidnapped there, then humiliated and whipped, and that sequence is the story. Pain and degradation are staged as a spectacle, not as play both sides have agreed to. On the shelf of nineteenth-century English flagellation porn, it sits on the harder side.
Later comment settled on the coldness. Victorian bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee called it “coldly cruel and unblushingly indecent.” Sexologist Iwan Bloch marked it “completely sadistic.” Later commentary by Simpson framed it as focused on violence against women. Taken together, the book shows a one-way sadistic pleasure with the mask off.
It sits with other Victorian flagellation literature, with Carrington’s other imprints, and with the birch-novel line. That line runs forward into modern spanking-fetish media, which still has this text as an early reference.
