Eagle Houston: Montrose Leather Bar and Mr. Texas Eagle

Eagle Houston, also called The Eagle, is a gay bar in Montrose, Houston, Texas. Like the unaffiliated bars in dozens of cities that share the Eagle name, it is not a franchise outlet. It is a local house aimed at leather and bear crowds. It is a regular meeting place, and it hosts the Mr. Texas Eagle leather contest, which ties Houston into the regional title circuit leather communities still use for visibility and fundraising.

In January 2016 a fire forced the Eagle to close for a while. The same year a mural tied to Mary’s, another piece of Houston gay-bar history, was digitized and painted again on the Eagle’s walls. The wall work linked the room to older queer memory in Montrose.

In 2018 the bar’s visibility rose. Logo TV’s NewNowNext ranked it the ninth most popular gay bar in the United States, a national notice for a leather-and-bear room. It was also a finalist for Favorite Place to Watch Male Dancers, Favorite Bar to Shoot Pool, and Club or Restaurant with Best Margarita. Taken together, that is a full house: a community bar, men’s cruise energy, a place to wear the gear, happy hour, dancers, and pool.
