Darker is a 2017 erotic romance by the British writer E. L. James. The full title is Darker: Fifty Shades Darker as Told by Christian. It is the fifth book in the Fifty Shades series, and it is not a conventional sequel. It retells the second novel, Fifty Shades Darker. Anastasia Steele narrated the original. This one switches entirely to the billionaire Christian Grey, and puts the same relationship arc inside the dominant man’s monologue.
The story picks up at the breakup that ends Fifty Shades of Grey. Christian tries to win Anastasia back after the punishment that ended their first arrangement. She is unwilling at first and will restart only on her terms. As they move closer again, the threats come from Christian’s traumatic past and from Anastasia’s boss, Jack Hyde. The beats follow the second book: reconciliation, intimacy and control turning up, an outside antagonist. The point of the retelling is to look at his BDSM contract and his emotional damage through his own eyes.
James announced the book on September 10, 2016. After the November 28, 2017 release, The Guardian put it at number one on the UK top 50, with more than 300,000 copies sold in the first week. For readers who meet BDSM through mass media, Darker is not a technical manual of safe power exchange. It is a commercial point-of-view flip inside the best-known soft-focus D/s romance brand of the 2010s.
