In 2006 American singer Kelis released her fourth studio album, Kelis Was Here. It was the first album without her long-time collaborators the Neptunes; Sean Garrett and Polow da Don led a wider producer bench. The hip-hop track “Blindfold Me,” issued as the album’s second U.S. single on October 3, 2006, carried a remix with then-husband Nas writing and performing a verse. Blunt sex talk and a bondage-coded video made it a mid-2000s pop-fetish object.
Sound and bedroom taunts
The song runs three minutes and 48 seconds, with synthesizers, synth horns, drums, and Polow’s trademark sirens. Critics filed it as pop-rap, club music, “space-age hip-hop,” or R&B; some heard Timbaland in the urgency. The lyric is sex talk around a blindfold and a kiss—the line about refusing a bite until the blindfold is on stuck as the hook. Kelis’s delivery was called panting, husky, half-rapping and half-singing: a naughty, confident bedroom romp. On the remix Nas adds his own verse and the couple’s private kink talk.
Parking-lot grab, panther, rope
Marc Klasfeld directed the video in Los Angeles in September 2006. It premiered September 6 on the documentary series Access Granted with a behind-the-scenes feature. Nas takes Kelis from a parking lot and ties her up; a black panther is part of the foreplay. Press read the clip as sexual fetishism. Some writers praised the chemistry; others called it a failed sexy sell. Either way, putting a married couple’s fetish play on a pop audiovisual platform kicked off an argument about voyeurism and comfort.
Split reviews and a #91 peak
Critics split. Supporters treated Kelis’s sex-on-her-own-terms persona as a highlight and heard range in dropping an ode to bondage after a sentimental track. Detractors hated the sequencing and, on the Nas remix, heard uncomfortable voyeurism about the marriage. The single peaked at number 91 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and did not appear on Kelis’s 2008 compilation The Hits—an omission some critics flagged.
