Temperature play is BDSM sensual play that hits the skin’s heat and cold receptors. Everyday materials include water, oil, molten wax, ice, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, melted butter, chilled fruit, and steamed vegetables. Cutlery, ball chains, necklaces, and similar objects are often preheated in hot water or chilled in ice water. Space heaters and radiators work as heat sources too. Blindfolds deepen the effect; bondage can amplify it. People also put someone into hotter or colder surroundings more directly. Safety has to match the material, the technique, and the body part.
Fire play puts flame on or very near the skin and is usually treated as edge play—exciting, with real danger. Common tools are fire wands (small torches), flaming gloves, and flaming floggers. Fuel is often 70% isopropyl alcohol; mousse, hand sanitizer, high-proof rum, grain alcohol, and flash cotton show up as well. Most fire scenes feel more like hot wax or sensation play than sharp pain. Marks are uncommon, though some people deliberately leave light burns so the skin stays red and irritated. Gear and safety rules are argued over constantly among players.
Two common techniques are bouncing and streaking. Bouncing runs lit fire wands along the skin, with or without transfer of burning fuel. Streaking paints fuel on the skin (often straight lines, sometimes elaborate patterns), lights it, and extinguishes it before the skin burns. Fuel is often laid down with unlit wands, then lit with a lit wand; double-headed or paired wands speed the work.
Fire cupping heats the air inside a cup—almost always glass—then seats it on the skin so cooling air pulls a low-pressure pocket and draws skin into the cup. Experienced cuppers vary suction by controlling heat. The practice comes from traditional and holistic medicine: Western medicine used cupping to move blood as recently as the American Civil War; masseurs, Chinese medicine (where it is said to predate needle acupuncture), and traditional Arab medicine still use it. Asian shops sell sets; some sell only to licensed massage therapists. Methods include wiping alcohol on the skin, lighting it, and quickly seating the cup (often criticized for burn risk and hard-to-control suction); warming the cup over open flame then applying it to cool skin (some call this safer; others worry about heating the glass, and beginners struggle for strong suction); and seating cotton balls of alcohol on leather disks on the skin, lighting them, and covering with a cup (the leather is meant to shield, but the method is fiddly and easy to burn with). Cups leave small round marks for hours or days; repeating one spot can leave a deep bruise. Combined with blood play it is called blood- or wet-cupping: the skin is pierced with needles or scalpels first, then suction draws blood—also from traditional medicine.
Ice play usually means sliding ice over bare skin. Pop culture often uses it as kink-flavored foreplay (films such as Do the Right Thing and 9½ Weeks) without calling it BDSM. In BDSM it can go further. Ice is sometimes used as an insertable for vagina, anus, and occasionally the male urethra, but melting ice can form edges sharp enough to cut tender tissue. Part or all of the body may sit in ice or ice water for short periods; longer exposure risks hypothermia and frostbite. Ice also contrasts well in scenes that already use warm or hot stimuli.
Cold and heat exposure push further. Metal and glass toys can go in the fridge or a warming pouch. Cold torture may mean standing or lying naked in snow—free or tied open to maximize contact—or dousing with cold water in wind or under fans. Risks are hypothermia and frostbite. Heat torture often wraps someone in plastic wrap, blankets, or leather or PVC bodysuits with legs together and arms at the sides; other options are hard activity in severe heat or sun, and less often heaters, fire, or coals. Electric shock is sometimes added so the person works harder and makes more body heat. Main heat risks are dehydration and, in extremes, heatstroke. Cold and heat exposure can also be foreplay around intercourse or orgasm. All of this is for negotiated adults; fire, ice insertion, and extreme exposure need clear risk talk first.
